The Autumn Harvest Change Of Shift Print E-mail

Welcome, welcome, welcome to this autumnal edition of Change of Shift, that most venerable of nursing blog carnivals, hosted for the first time here on Nurse LinkUp!

We are calling this The Autumn Harvest Change of Shift, and we encourage you to sit back, relax, and take in the abundance of stories, anecdotes and other sharings that make Change of Shift so special and significant.

At this time of year, the cornucopia of the Autumn harvest helps us to prepare for the long winter ahead, fortifying us with vitamins, minerals, and all of the nutrients we need to survive.

Similarly, the creativity and intelligence of nurses who dare to write and share their thoughts with the rest of the world also feeds us---intellectually, emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically.

So, take it in and feed yourself with the words of nurses......

There's something on the menu for everyone.

 ~APPETIZER~

Well, we begin the feast with Kim from Emergiblog, the nurse blogger extraordinaire who founded Change of Shift, and who continually surprises us with her creativity and her innate ability to bring people together. This week, she sends us on a journey in a post entitled "We Manage Chaos". From stateside emergency rooms to the trauma centers run by uniformed nurses in Iraq, Kim reminds us that nurses know how to work with chaos, and she reminds us that our accomplishments are worthy of our pride.

 ~SOUP~

Speaking of emergency rooms, ER Murse submits a lament about Rapid Medical Evaluations (RMEs) in a post entitled Drinking the RME Cool-Aid at ENA's Annual Conference

~SALAD~

Meanwhile, over at Licensed to Ill, the blogger formerly known as Angry Male Nurse shares a provocative and poetic missive entitled Appetite for Deconstruction

And the autumn harvest feast continues.......

~MAIN COURSES~

At NurseConnect, Nurse Laura shares Daydreams of an Acute Care Nurse, a post wherein the author wonders aloud what it would be like to work in an ideal facility, and she invites us to share how we would envision the perfect work environment (perhaps designed by nurses).

When it comes to the subject of self-care, nurses are not necessarily well-known for indulging in such frivolousness. After all, we have to take care of everyone else, right? But at "My Health and Fitness Blog", the author describes a journey into holistic treatment to cure chronic pain without medicine, and there is much food for thought contained therein.

Speaking of injuries and pain, Dean Moyer of The Back Pain Blog offers some tips for avoiding injury in his latest post, Back Pain and Anger. (And for what it's worth, kicking a fire hydrant isn't one of them.)

As we gather around the harvest table, we notice that there are nursing students (and those who want to be nursing students) among the hungry masses. These soon-to-be-nurses need to be fed, and at this particular feast, several submissions are served up for their edification:

  • Christina at RN Central provides us with a list of The 100 Best Blogs for Nursing Students, described as "sites that are meant to inspire, motivate and educate nursing students in school and beyond."
  • Working in pediatrics can be challenging, and the Nursery Jobs Only website describes in detail the responsibilities and opportunities open to those individuals who are Working as a Pediatric Clinical Nurse
  • As for a career in rehab nursing, Karin at Nurse's Life Blog relates how a rehab floor compares to telemetry, Med/Surg and Orthopedics in Why Rehab Nursing. As a telemetry nurse who just happened to float to a rehab floor, she seemed to truly enjoy seeing how the other half nurses.
  • In terms of taking on the moniker of "nurse", our Canadian friend at Running Wildly communicates quite clearly the intensity of the "Identity Shift"---and fear---that one must undergo in order to transform from nursing student to full-fledged novice nurse. We have no doubt that she will herself be a stellar nurse.

My, oh my. Are we getting full yet? The table is laden, and still there is more for us to sample. Do we dare continue? Why not?

Well, for myself, I have several posts to share with Change of Shift readers this time around. While I wish they were sweet, delightful and ready to be served for dessert, these particular posts could possibly be equated more with fiber---foods that might be good for you in the long run but don't necessarily make your mouth water with anticipation. The first post I'd like to share reflects on the current economic crisis and its effects on the elderly and vulnerable citizens of the United States. And the second post describes the ongoing struggle to have an Office of the National Nurse created by the United States government. (Perhaps this paragraph should come with a free coupon for Pepto Bismol?)

~DESSERT~

Well, for dessert, we have a delightful story by one of Nurse LinkUp's own members, SunnyRN, who tells us the story of a wonderful nursing preceptor. This preceptor is not a jaded nurse who enjoys torturing a novice nurse and watching her squirm wih fear. No, Sunny's preceptor actually nurtured the author, challenged her appropriately, and did her best to make sure Sunny learned how to be a good nurse, an efficient nurse, a nurse who is grateful for being taught with compassion and grace. We should all be so lucky.

~THE BILL~

Now, when it comes to money, it's the last thing we want to talk about after a satisfying meal, but we all have to pay the Piper some time, and Nurse Ratched wants to remind us that "There's No Such Thing as a Rich Nurse."

~TEA AND SYMPATHY~

So, friends, guests and colleagues, thank you so much for joining us at the harvest table, and we hope you aren't so stuffed that you can't go out and take a healthy walk after our generous repast. Autumn is certainly a time of gathering abundance before the winter pays us a visit. This is also a time of renewal as the Jewish New Year begins. So, whatever your persuasion, culture, ethnicity or predilections, thanks for joining us today, and please keep up with Change of Shift as it roams from host to host. Also, (if you don't mind some shameless promotion on our part) please visit Nurse Linkup again, and consider becoming a member of this growing community of nurses that offers original content, news, user-generated blogs, a live chat room, and more great functions to come!

As Garrison Keillor says, "be well, do good work, and stay in touch."
