How do we get the right people into nursing school?

I have a question I am thinking about doing some research on...
We know there is a huge waiting list for a limited number of nursing school spots; we also know that a large percentage of new nurses leave the professions for good within the first years. Despite the hysteria of the "lateral violence" crowd, I think a large part of that loss is from people getting into and through nursing school that have no idea what the job is, or involves...
How do we fix that?

Career testing

I think that many career counselors and coaches still use different types of tests and assessments to determine a "good fit". I wonder what would happen if I took such a test now!

my experience

A long time ago, after I had received my English degree and absolutely hated teaching, I think now it was because I wasn't mature enough to be a teacher, having complete four years of college in two. A friend of mine was working on his master's thesis in psych, asked me if I would consider taking several career tests for him. Every single test indicated, anything in medicine and I chose nursing. The reason I chose nursing back then, more than anything was I simply didn't have the money to go to med school, but the result was a mostly happy and fulfulled career as a nurse. I'm not sure if these types of tests are still being used or even available, but perhaps should be utilized as at least part of a key to accept candidates into nursing school.
