Thanks for your kind comments Keith.

I think studies in Ayurvedic medicine are limited in the US and western countries, unfortunately. Additionally more oversight testing and allowing these remedies would be a welcome change. Testing would help insure that the remedies that are on the market meet minimal safety standards.

Thanks for your comments!

Herbs and such

Yes, Ayurvedic doctors and practitioners of Chinese medicine both use herbs in various forms. I have never seen an Ayurvedic doctor, but I have seen many acupuncturists who have prescribed herbs for me. I agree that the herbs taste absolutely terrible most of the time, but I have had several mixtures that were not bad, especially with a little honey added! Also, I have bought empty capsules and made my own pills. It's tedious but kind of fun---especially for a nurse who wants to play pharmacist!

Anyway, I always knew my friend and colleague Rick Baker was a great writer, and his contributions to Nurse Linkup are just wonderful! We're hoping that he'll grace us with several articles every month! - NurseKeith

This is a very interesting article---and a great story! I had heard the term "ayurveda" before but had no idea what it meant. (Granted, I never tried to look it up on Google, either!)

Have there been many studies done on Ayurvedic medicine? Are there conditions that it doesn't work for, or illnesses that are contraindicated for such treatment?

It seems like the use of herbs and plants in Ayurveda is similar to traditional Chinese medicine. I saw an acupuncturist once who have me a bag of powdered herbs to take for a stomach problem I was having. I was very dubious, but I mixed the herbs in hot water and gulped it down three times a day for a month. It was, I think, very effective, but it tasted awful! (Next time, someone told me, I can buy empty capsules and make my own pills instead of mixing the herbs in water---now they tell me!)

Anyway, great article, and I would love to hear more!
