AUSTIN - Texas, like the rest of the nation, has an acute shortage of nurses, and though too few schools and teachers are part of the problem, the biggest reason is inadequate working conditions, mainly the high ratio of patients per nurse.

That was the message hundreds of nurses from across the state brought to the steps of the Texas Capitol on Thursday.

As a teenager, Deb Maitre followed a neighbor's advice to take a summer job caring for elderly patients at a skilled nursing center.

Maitre, who was only 16 at the time, was initially overwhelmed by the job. Patients needed help with almost every aspect of daily life, from dressing to eating to bathing.

She went home the first night and cried.

Then something changed.
