As far as we know, Nurse Practitioners are advanced practice nurses who, in most states, have prescriptive authority. NPs must work under the supervision of an MD, but can write prescriptions for most classes of meds. There are some states where NPs can "hang a shingle" but I think they still need to have a supervising MD.
Now, there is a new type of advanced practice nurse being talked about---The Doctor of Nursing---a PhD-level nurse who can work within a specific scope of practice without a supervising doc. Of course, the American Medical Association is up in arms about this.....
We recommend you find our NurseLinkUp member named "NPs Save Lives" and visit her blog. You can also contact NurseKeith who can point you in the right direction.
